The SafeMen Project is NOT about MEN

The SafeMen Project is about having conversations, so everyone is safer

It is most easily understood through this story.

  • I was walking alone, listening to a podcast through my earbuds when it was interrupted by some voices. The voice of an elderly lady spoke in a trembling voice. “Darlings – stay close. It’s late and it’s dark, but I’m sure help will be here soon.”
  • “Yes, Grandma,” came the response in unison from 2 young girls, the tremor in their voices communicating their fear too.
  • I looked around, peering through the darkness down the laneway. I could just make out the silhouettes of the woman and her granddaughters beside a car with steam billowing from the raised engine bonnet. The grandmother was right to feel cautious. There had been some nasty events nearby recently. I knew it was my duty to look out for others, so I made my way towards the trio.
  • They turned to me, unsure whether to feel safe or more fearful, when my phone cast a glowing aura around me. The grandmother breathed a sigh of relief, smiled and said: “Oh thank goodness you’re here …. You’re a SAFE MAN.”
  • I reassured them and phoned for roadside assistance, remaining with them until they were on their way again, comforted that the system worked. The connection between the override conversation through my podcast, and the glowing aura for verification that they were safe with me, meant the quest for Safe Families and Safe Communities was working.

Jeff’s philosophy “Life is like a series of rivers to cross - some narrow and some incredibly wide. We need resilience, discipline, and support to navigate the elements, undercurrents and mental challenges needed to get to the other side. At the moment I'm resting on the bank of a river, after swimming in relative solitude for 2 years. The river before that took me 10 years to swim across. So now I'm busy restoring, reconnecting, reflecting, and projecting as to which river I will cross next”.

Richard Paterson

Steering Committee
In Richard's own words "I am one of those blokes whose life has made no sense forwards. However, as I reflect back, some semblance of reason and order becomes evident. My life all seemed pretty mainstream going to Uni and becoming a school teacher, but the "mojo" was never there. And REASON has always been a primary consideration for me, even before I realised this. I have spent years in sales and sales management, teaching, and I established a kids charity 25 years ago to support kids with a dying sibling - because they were missed in the "care circle". I did that for 8 years and then family struck my own household and I ended up as a solo parent, raising my now 20 year old son on my own since he was 4. IN the midst of all the 8 years of Family Court litigation around my son's safety, my health declined, and I was diagnosed with a pre-cancer condition. I ignored this and spoke to no-one about it until one day I woke up and was confronted with the question "What happens to my son, if this becomes cancer?" That recalibrated me dramatically and at that point I took control of my health and I have owned it ever since - including losing 50kg. My mantra now is "once I found my WHY, my HOW found me" And that is the foundation of the Mens Health Charity I have just founded. A new journey begins with the view from my rear-view mirror giving context to what I now see in my life's windscreen."
