Today I am grateful for music.

To be honest, lately I’m a bit frustrated. Gigs are slowly coming back...but! This picture from a gig last Sunday was attended by two council officers with a decibel meter. I complied with the request to turn the volume down to 75dB, well below the chatter of the crowded bar. In good humour the crowd responded with a fairy clap after each song. This may have antagonised the council officers more? I‘ve just found out the venue will no longer have live music and, for the second time this year, a series of bookings have been cancelled.

It‘s been a difficult time for musicians and live venues since the pandemic shut down the global music industry. These extra compliance and sound restrictions are frustrating. I am grateful I’ve had the opportunity to play music professionally in local venues and on cruise ships but the future of this profession is in doubt?

Music is a wonderful medium to evoke and inspire change and also comforts the soul when acceptance to unwanted change is challenging. This implies that, as a musician, I am perfectly positioned to be inspired to change and be comforted about my losses as well.

The future of live music is uncertain. Yet, the principles of acceptance, courage and wisdom produces clarity and sanity. I can not fix the problems of the world but I can respond with patience and good choices to my circumstances. I do not fear the future but live today with hope and gratitude. Today is a good day.

Thank you for the music.
